Metro Manila’s transport group Manibela launched a nationwide strike from Monday, September 14 through Tuesday, September 15, protesting fuel prices. This time it is not only jeepney drivers — some ride-hailing and motorcycle-taxi groups have said they are joining too. For anyone out at night, the biggest concern is simple: getting a ride home after midnight may be harder than usual.
First, the schedule. The strike runs on the 14th and 15th, but as the post below shows, a second wave is planned for Monday–Tuesday, September 21–22. If you are flying into Manila next week, keep those dates in mind when planning your nights.
The detail that matters most for nightlife is that ride-hailing groups have signalled they will take part. A verified tracking account also reported that jeepney, ride-hailing and motorcycle-taxi groups are all involved.
That said, Grab will not shut down entirely. In past strikes the usual pattern is a modest drop in cars, with slightly longer waits and higher surge pricing — especially in the late-night hubs of Poblacion, P.Burgos, BGC and Malate, where the app can be hard to catch at peak hours anyway.
Three tips for tonight. One, check your ride home before you start drinking. Opening the app early to gauge car counts and fares beats scrambling for a car at 1 or 2 a.m. Two, carry a bit more cash, because you may need to switch to a street taxi or tricycle; insist on the meter and walk away from inflated flat offers. Three, keep your venues within walking distance. In Poblacion, lining up bar one and bar two on foot means rain or traffic won’t strand you.
On safety: police have been deployed in large numbers across the capital for the strike. The protests happen at designated assembly points and are not aimed at the nightlife districts, but expect occasional congestion on main roads. Give yourself extra time along EDSA and Ayala Avenue.
Bottom line for tonight and tomorrow: don’t over-stack your bar crawl, move early, and keep cash on hand. Do that and a strike night is still an easy night out — just remember the second wave on the 21st–22nd when you set your weekend plans.
